History of Republic Day: Why We Celebrate Republic Day?

Republic Day one of the most important National Festival of India is celebrated on 26 January 1950, the day our Indian Constitution came into force, replacing the Government of India Act that had previously determined the date for our country.

The Constitution was not given until 15 August 1947, the day India became independent. Instead, the Government of India Act of 1935 served as the primary basis for the laws.

Later, on August 29, 1947, a resolution was approved in which Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar was nominated as the Chairman of the Drafting Committee constituted for the framing of the independent Constitution of our country.

The standards outlined in our Indian Constitution were drafted for approximately 2 years and 11 months. Ultimately, our Indian Constitution came into force on January 26, 1950

The date of 26 January was chosen because it marked the declaration of Indian independence by the Indian National Congress at Purna Swaraj in 1930. Thus, the nation celebrates Republic Day, which is remembered.

How is Republic Day Celebrated in India?

Indian military services arrange several parades and flag-hoisting programs for this day. Many schools across the country host excellent Cultural Events, such as Parades, Singing, Dancing, etc.

The largest military procession, which perfectly combines the military might and rich cultural heritage of our country, takes place at Rajpath in New Delhi

The Delhi Republic Day Parade is organized by the Ministry of Defense to commemorate those who have sacrificed their lives for their country, honor martyrs, and honor military personnel, civilians, or private citizens for their brave actions. Gallantry medals are awarded for.

The President of India was saluted when an Indian Army contingent passed by him. The parade begins with the presentation of gallantry awards to the winners, and then a display of combat tanks, missiles, and other military hardware. 

The Prime Minister of India lays a sympathy wreath at Amar Jawan Jyoti, India Gate, in honor of the Indian Army Soldiers who gave their lives for their country.

After this, several armed personnel including Police and National Cadet Corps Home Guards marched on Rajpath to show their enthusiasm. 

The parade includes the national anthem, multiple gun salutes, and flag hoisting. Bravery awards are given to the winners. The festival concluded with an adventurous Bike Ride and an Indian Air Force Airshow.

 

Significance of Republic Day Celebrations in India:

Republic Day was celebrated on January 26, 1950, to mark the anniversary of the adoption of the Indian Constitution. 

After the country declared Independence from British rule on August 15, 1947, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar chaired a drafting committee that was tasked with creating an independent national constitution. 

The day honors India’s sovereignty and individuality as well as the people’s democratic right to choose their government. This day is celebrated at the national level to commemorate the adoption of the Indian Constitution.

The Indian Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution on November 26, 1949, and it came into force on January 26, 1950, under a democratic system.  

Every year 26th January is a public holiday in the country. By the way, all municipal, state, and federal government offices remain closed on this day. Every other company and commercial establishments are either closed or operating with reduced hours.
